Gonzo – Live @ BluJaz (28-01-2011)

Last Friday night was Pushin’ On‘s monthly gig at BluJaz Café, and I was lucky enough to play some tunes alongside Singapore’s very own (and very talented) XS Collective.

Despite their young age, these guys rocked the house with heavy beats and smooth flows. I had already caught one or two of the members at some hip-hop performances, but I’d never seen the whole line-up perform a live show before.

I believe they filmed their performance, but while that video is properly edited here’s a little sample of what they do:

Right after their show I played some of my favorite hip-hop beats followed by a mix of favorite roots, jazz and garage rock classics. Even though I recorded the entire 2h30 show I only kept the first part because it contains a lot of newer tracks I haven’t played before.

By the way, I just found these dope BluJaz Café video teasers that are hinting at a longer video on the bar, its musicians and the general good vibes it brings to Singapore’s nightlife:

Music Videos – My Latest Findings and Likes

I finally connected my Youtube account with my Facebook account, so I can start keeping track of cool tracks and music videos I’ve browsed (and I do go through a lot in a given week).

Below are some of my findings these past two weeks, in no particular order but general genre.

Enjoy!

Videos of the Day – All Hail the 45 King!

Somehow I’ve just started getting into some of the sounds mixed and/or produced by Mark James, aka DJ Mark, aka the 45 King, and I am hooked!

I know I’m kind of late to the party, but I’m going to catch up by reading up and listening to all the stuff this guy makes using 45 rpm records.

This interview seems like a good start, and the following videos seem like an excellent follow-up:

Videos of the day – Korla Pandit

As you’ll have noticed I like to make my own custom intros and outros for my podcasts, usually thematically and/or aurally linked to the nature of the podcast. I basically have a huge collection of samples from movies, TV shows, radio shows, stand up bits, and anything else I may find interesting and/or useful. But sometimes I need to scour the internet to find just the piece of sound that I need. My next podcast, for instance, will focus on old Turkish records bought during a trip to Istanbul, and I have to admit I have no audio ressources referring to that.

So I spent some time on blogs and Youtube to find inspiration. I was also doing some searches for images, when I stumbled upon the excellent Thrift Store DJ blog. I’m going to have to find some time to download and listen to all the excellent music that’s available on that website, but what first brought me there was a video featuring Korla Pandit. From that video I watched and read everything I could find on him, and I must say I am pretty damn impressed by all I’ve found on him.

Anyway, here’s the video from which I’m going to sample the voice-over from the beginning, followed by an incredible song and dance version of Miserlou (a.K.a. Misirlou, a.k.a. “the song from Pulp Fiction”, a.k.a. “that Black Eyed Peas song”…ugh…). Enjoy!

How could you not love that turban and that face at the end of each video?
